Balloons Used to Contraband Cigarettes Closed Vilnius Airport
Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
