The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
